This week’s parsha begins with the verse: “When you count the Jewish People every man should give an atonement for himself to the Almighty when you count them …”
The Midrash states that we are referring here to a loan. The Almighty is saying that the Jewish People are indebted to Me and they may repay with the half shekel they donate to the Mishkan.
What is this debt that the Midrash speaks about?
We find in the Gemora and Midrash that the Almighty doesn’t feed the poor in order that the Jewish Peo
